〔内容〕
　この実話物語は、古来“魔の山”として人々を拒否し続けてきたミステリアスな山“大台ヶ原”を一人の修行者が己を顧みず命を賭して“癒やしの山”に開拓した希有な物語である。
　主人公、古川嵩は20代後半、うつ病に罹り各地の病院を受診するが完治しなかった。それで、父と共に御岳山神社へ。参籠の結果、病は快癒した。参籠を終えた朝、主人公は、山頂で仏陀のおつげを聞く。おつげは「南国に魔の山がある。その山がおまえを待っておる」というものだった。
　彼はその言葉を胸に秘めたまま、当座の生計を立てるため雑貨店を開業する。店は順調に売り上げを伸ばしていったが、数年後国全体が不況の嵐となる。その煽りで廃業した。失意の時、仏陀の言葉が蘇る。そして、自らも助かった山岳信仰の尊さに目覚め、我が人生はこれだと確信。仏陀のおつげを信じ、魔境と言われ人々が恐れていた「大台ヶ原」開拓に命がけで挑戦するサクセスストーリー。見所は、主人公が獰猛な日本オオカミと
寝起きし、嵩の手助けをするところだ。
　大台ヶ原の存在は、隣接する“巡礼道、熊野古道”が世界文化遺産に登録されたことで知名度は上がった。だが、全国的には知る人は少ない。同じ日本百名山でも、日本アルプス等は登山家でなくてもよく知られている。
　なぜ大台ヶ原は知名度が低かったのか？　理由は、開拓されたのが大正から昭和初期だったことと、他の名山のように頂上征服を目的とする山ではないからだろう。
　大台ヶ原は、奈良県と三重県の境に位置する台地状の山で、標高は1695メートルと高くはない。その代わり非常にユニークな山だ。日本百名山の殆どが山頂征服を目的としているのに対して、唯一この山だけは“癒やしと自然美”に秀でた山なのだ。そのため、天空の楽園とも呼ばれている。
　この物語の原作は半生記前、歴史研究家、鈴木林氏が、消えかかった資料集めに奔走し苦難の末書き上げたもの。二次作者は、大台に魅せられた郷土史家、杉岡昇氏が原作者の了解を得て執筆したもので、二度と世に出ない貴重本だ。
　山の辺書房では、是非後世に残さなければという思いから英語版も出版。現在、アメリカ、イギリス、カナダ、ドイツ、オランダ、ブラジル等で購読されている。
